How to Prepare Your Septic System for Spring

Are you wondering about the importance of spring cleaning your septic system, and you reside in or near Prior Lake, MN? You may plan for your septic tank to last as long as your home will. While this is possible, you must perform several routine steps to keep your system in tip-top shape. Schedule your pumping service today!

Spring Cleaning Your Septic System

Check Your Pumping Schedule

Consider the size of your household and the amount of water you use, and determine a pumping schedule. Household size and water usage are important to consider because they may have increased or decreased. Many typical households with up to four people can have septic system maintenance every few years. However, if your household is much larger, or you have noticed an increase in the amount of water you are using, you will want to alter your pumping timetable accordingly. With this in mind, schedule to have your system pumped every year and a half.

Inspect Surrounding Areas and Field

Check the septic field and areas surrounding it for damage, dirt, flooding, or overflow. You should also check these areas to see if any repairs are needed. For instance, check your home’s gutters and see if they are pointed in the right direction to prevent flooding.

Schedule Frequent Maintenance

If you see any damage near your septic system or the system itself, make sure you schedule to have the necessary repairs completed as soon as you can. Finding the cause is also important to ensure that future problems don’t occur. If any of the surrounding areas have damage (for example, to the bushes or trees), be sure to contact the appropriate company to take care of the damage.

Perform Upgrades

Upgrades are sometimes necessary. For example, maybe the filter in your septic system could be replaced. Or maybe your system is deep underground, or you want to install a concrete riser or aerator. Many features can improve the performance of your system, but first you must schedule to have any upgrades completed so that you can enjoy all the benefits.

Treat Your System With Care

Even if you maintain your septic tank system regularly, you still need to remember to take care of it throughout the year to ensure that it operates efficiently.

If you have a garbage disposal in your home, be prudent in how often you use it. Using it too often can take a toll on the septic tank as it increases working space.

Furthermore, you should check the brand of toilet paper you use in your household to ensure it is compatible with your septic system. Some toilet paper brands cannot be dissolved easily, resulting in backups and clogs.
