Health Problems Associated with Septic Tank Failures

Failure of your septic system could result in a variety of problems in your home. While you’re likely going to be more concerned initially with the potential mess that could result from such a failure, it’s also important for you to consider and address the possible septic tank-related health issues you could face if you have a septic system failure in Prior Lake, MN.

When a septic system begins to fail, it will frequently release toxic fumes from the gases built up in the tank. One example of such a gas that could emanate from the system is methane, which is both toxic to people and pets and also highly flammable. Another example is sulfide gas, which smells like rotten eggs and can result in irritation in the nose, throat and mouth with prolonged exposure.

Beyond the negative effects associated with the fumes and toxic gases, you should also consider the bacteria that can come through septic systems that have failed and are releasing toxic fumes. These bacteria can result in the development of respiratory conditions and sinus infections.

Finally, there’s a possibility that septic systems can send mold spores into your home when they fail. This can cause or worsen symptoms of allergies and asthma, and can result in greater mold growth in dark, damp parts of your home that could, over time, lead to structural damage that can be expensive to repair.

Be proactive when you have septic system issues

When you consider all of the above health problems and other damaging effects that septic tank failures and toxic septic gases can cause, it is important that you take quick, proper action if you are having problems with your septic system:

  • Maintenance: Most of these issues can be avoided entirely if you simply stay on top of your necessary ongoing maintenance. This means having a professional come out to inspect the system on a regular basis to check and see if there are any potential vulnerabilities or issues in the system, so you can address them before they become more problematic and result in system failure. It also means staying on top of regular septic system pumping so you can keep waste at proper levels in the tank.
  • Avoid clogging the drain field: You must also make sure you take proper care of the drain field. Avoid planting any trees or shrubs near the system, as the roots can interfere with the drain field and clog it up. Make sure you’re only flushing items down the toilet that belong there—that’s limited to waste and toilet paper. Avoid using a garbage disposal in your sink, and clear food off plates and bowls in the garbage before rinsing them off.
  • Limit grease discharge: As much as possible, limit grease discharge down into the system. Grease should be poured off into another container before you wash items in the sink.
