Tips for Preparing Your Septic System for Winter

The vast majority of problems that occur with septic systems are the result of improper maintenance over the course of a single year or an extended period time. Therefore, if you have a property that uses a septic system, it’s important to keep it in good condition all year long. With winter coming soon and the ground getting ready to freeze, it’s especially important to make sure you’ve set yourself up for success to avoid having to get emergency septic pump repair in Prior Lake, MN.

With this in mind, here are a few tips to protect your septic system this winter so you don’t have to spend a large amount of money on unnecessary repairs that could have easily been avoided:

  • Get septic service if you’re due for it: As a general rule, you should have your tank serviced every one to three years, depending on the size of the tank and the amount of usage it gets. Regular maintenance is absolutely crucial to maintaining the health of the system over the long term, and only skilled professionals are capable of providing this type of maintenance. A routine inspection will help uncover any small issues or problems before they get out of control, meaning you won’t have to worry about suddenly having a disaster scenario on your hands. This goes beyond just pumping your tank—you should have the entire system checked out by an experienced professional.
  • Clear the ground: Over the summer months, stuff tends to accumulate outside on our properties, considering the amount of time we spend outside. Therefore, make sure you’ve cleared the ground over your septic system before the cold weather hits. You might still have some lounge chairs, yard equipment or other items over the top of your septic cover and leach field. Put them back in their proper place so you can make sure your septic system is easily accessible in the event of an emergency scenario. If you have any heavy vehicles, such as riding lawn mowers, ATVs or automobiles, you shouldn’t be driving or parking these on top of your septic system in the first place. But if they’re there for whatever reason, move them away as soon as possible.
  • Be smart with your water: Install low-flow fixtures in your home and repair any leaking faucets or toilets to save water and prevent any unnecessary strain on the system as the weather gets colder. Look around your yard and divert other water sources away from the septic system, which, again, will help you avoid making the system work any harder than it needs to.

Stay on top of your routine maintenance, and you shouldn’t have any problems with your septic system come winter. Of course, if you do find yourself in need of the services of a qualified professional with experience in septic pump repair in Prior Lake, MN, we are here for you.
